The Long Book
oil on paper
29.5” x 22”

On a trip to New Orleans with my sister, we witnessed an intimate, silent interaction between a son and his mother. The young mother, appearing to be both blind and deaf, exclusively communicated with her son through body language. As the young boy shifted in his seat during the half hour ride on the streetcar, his mother moved her knee to meet his. This connection at the knees was never broken for the duration of the ride. It seemed as though the weight of this child’s surprisingly large book was comparable only to the weight on his young shoulders. The maturity demonstrated by this pre-teen and the literal and figurative connection between these two was one of the most powerful bonds I’ve ever witnessed in strangers.
