The Red Shoes

Originally written by Hans Christian Andersen, “The Red Shoes” has since been reinterpreted by other artists including a 1948 film, a musical in 1993, a 2005 ballet and even a Kate Bush album. All versions of this story end with the lead character’s feet being “struck off” for one reason or another.

This painting specifically refers to the story outlined in the film starring Moira Shearer in which a young woman is torn between the man she loves and her career pursuits. Nobody wins in this crazy tale and the theory, “you can’t have it all” continues…
